What is an annual fee?

Most credit cards incur an annual fee and these can range from $50 to $400, depending on the features and rewards the card provides.

Customers are often tempted to sign up to cards with higher annual fees because of benefits such as free travel insurance, extended product warranty, reward programs, cashback, frequent flyer programs and even personal concierge services that can plan and organize your trips.

However, these top end credit cards come at a considerably high annual fee and unless you regularly use your credit card for large purchases or frequently travel, then the cost of the annual fee quickly outweighs the benefits of the card.

What is a low annual fee credit card?

We have defined a low annual fee credit card as $100 or less per year, which works out to be about $8 per month and about 30 cents per day.

A low annual fee credit card is best suited to people that accumulate a small amount of credit card debt and who enjoy the instant or general rewards that low annual fee cards provide, such as the St. George Instant Savings scheme.

However, if you find that you regularly use your credit card for expensive purchases and generate a large amount of debt, you should consider a dedicated reward, cash back or frequent flyer credit card or a gold or platinum credit card as these will provide more value for your money.

Low annual fee credit card – our recommendations

A low annual fee credit card might save you a few hundred dollars per year, which is a sensible saving if you don’t spend enough to redeem credit card rewards. However, if you are unable to repay your credit card debt before the interest free period expires, the interest fees will end up costing you more than the savings you would make from a low annual fee.

Recommendation: always pay off your credit card debt before the interest free period has expired, otherwise the interest fees can easily surpass the money you save from a lower annual fee.
